MAY THEY REST IN PEACE

They went with songs to the battle, they were
young straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against the odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the
morning we will remember them.

With regards to Jacko, Paul Jackson, 28/11/72, the official report said he was killed by shrapnel coming through a hatch, I spoke to the RCT bloke who was driving the Saracen on that fateful day, he told a different story, can I put it on here or will I get some one in trouble, do not care for myself, they can try what they like with me but do not want to get the site in strife.
After surviving major cancer surgery,( prostate ) and TWO lots of brain surgery no petty official can scare me off, I would like the truth out there, but i appreciate what the site administrators do and do not want to give them any difficulty.

Stand your ground firm Spanner when you report !!!! Because Ken Wharton dug out lots of interesting NI findings !!!! So whats either read or blocked here mate can be read in Kens new NI Books !!!!! The true truth always hurts them in this country mate as you know !!!!! Its the kid on the ground at the time whos knows the truth !!!!! So if goverments ect cannot will not or no it was not as the soldier said then bully for them !!!!! We had as you know very difficult times in Belfast and Londonderry in the early 70s of which in our eyes we did an outstanding job !!!!! Good Luck Spanner when you march on the carpet !!!! John

Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

NO, the motoe kept breaking down and we were not allowed to touch it, had to be sent to base workshop and one time the Navy lads on the ship there DROPPED it on the jetty and knocked a hole in the bottom so it had to be sent away for repair.

i spoke to Jacko in the morning before going to work, as events unfolded, the bomb squad asked to borrow him, he was HQ Bty cleark and regimental photographer and this was a different device so they wanted pics, we were all shocked when we heard the news but this is what the RCT driver of the Saracen told us.
They told him to back up to the wall where the device was and then stop, the left rear door was OPENED and Jacko was asked to lean out and take photos, as he did, BOOM. The left side of his head was blown away, all three bomb squad were injured, one of them lost an eye and the driver suffered blast effects which I know some about ( Belfast '71, another story ) he drove off, racing back to Fort George from where the injured were taken to hospital but Paul never made it.
If it was shrapnel through a hatch as the OFFICIAL report states, how did the others recieve injuries ? I believed the driver then and will go to my grave doing that.
I have NEVER doubted the courage of those who were in bomb disposal but am sure the report was 'doctored' as that door should never have been opened, it was the same three blokes we had been out with a week or so before, the Major had a 12bore loaded with solid shot and put some shots through the boats that were suspect to see what would happen, nothing did which is just as well as being in the boat we were wearing floatation vests and berets NOT flak jackets and helmets.
I can live with losing a mate although I felt some blame myself for over 30 years as I had not warned jacko about what to expect but I could not as I did not know he was going out with them untill too late, what bugs me is the doctoring of the report. Mad

youve hit it on the head mucker...... most "official reports" were "doctored" and we know why........ but like yourself i always beleve the lad telling the story and who was there.........ok we know over the years the "stories" get extended, thats just a squaddie thing, but in no way are they altered ....................
